The Quickening toured six rural locations in the East and South East of Ireland, locations for much of the artist’s project research. Designed to connect cultural institutions across the south east of Ireland with rural villages, farms and towns, the tour was developed in partnership with regional art centres, county arts offices, and with local farming communities in Kilkenny, Carlow, Wicklow, Wexford, Tipperary and Wexford. Walls & Halls was central to the overall project, bringing the film out of the institution and into the heart of farming communities – a powerful message of solidarity to farmers. Each event included an invited respondent and Q&A session who focussed on particular aspects of the film.
The Quickening Newspaper featuring interviews with farmers, the libretto, an overview of ‘Sustainment Experiment’ feasts and the artist’s ‘Letter to Lucy’ with writer, activist and curator Lucy R. Lippard accompanied the tour and exhibition and was freely available to those who attended. It was a way toengage audiences in advance of the Walls & Halls tour and show the slow research process that fed into the artwork. It was produced with the support of the Douglas Hyde gallery and designed by Bureau Bonanza.
