WALL
2001
An installation of unstretched paintings based on transferred imprints of Derry/Londonderry city walls.
This work was made specifically for the Context Gallery, now the CCA. Two eyeleted canvases were suspended in the space the colour palate the only indicator of difference. In a second space a rectangle was picked out in red pigment in the centre of another imprinted canvas, the same rectangle a shadowy trace in charcoal on the opposite wall, the subtle trace of the imprinted canvases a mute enactment of of the City walls.
Traced directly on to the canvas from areas of the wall itself, the paintings became a sort of topographic, forensic record, evidence not only of large political and historical concerns but also of the small biographical and personal meaning bound up in such landmarks.
Subsequently exhibited in Limerick City Gallery of Art in 2002
