A commissioned artwork for Saolta Arts in partnership with Galway 2020.
POST_ is an audio-based artwork designed to allow hospital patients, staff, and the wider public to imaginatively visit familiar parts of the West of Ireland. It explores the power and connection between place, practice and nature in the west of Ireland. Using a mix of scripted voice-over with ambient recordings, it was made in regions served by Saolta University Health Care Group. A journey through the social, cultural, and natural sounds of the West, POST_ interweaves the evocative sounds of wind and sea, with sounds from the home, farm, mart, and match.
POST_ has seven ‘chapters’ inspired by objects found in a former post office, X-PO. These objects serve as prompts to immerse the listener in sounds of a year’s turning. Starting with the story of the post office, the chapters reflect on the daily life of people, place and sites associated with the health of the spirit. The final chapter ends with the slow awakening of an ancient Oak and Hazel woodland at dawn during the deep silence of lockdown.
