A newly commissioned audio-based artwork
POST_ is an audio-based artwork by Deirdre designed to allow hospital patients, staff, and the wider public to imaginatively visit familiar parts of the West of Ireland. It explores the power and connection between place, practice and nature in the west of Ireland.
It is an immersive journey through the social, cultural, and natural sounds of a year’s passing, interweaving evocative sounds of a place shaped by wind and sea, with sounds from the home, farm, mart, and match. Using a mix scripted voice-over with ambient recordings, it was made in regions served by Saolta University Health Care Group.
POST_ has seven ‘chapters’ inspired by objects found in a former post office that serve as prompts to immerse the listener in sounds of a year’s turning. Starting with the story of the post office, the chapters reflect on the daily life of people, place and sites associated with the health of the spirit. The work ends with the slow awakening of an ancient Oak and Hazel woodland at dawn during the deep silence of lockdown.
