GROUNDWORKS
2017
Narrating a Danish village’s struggle to remain a self-sustaining community.
Commissioned for Grasslands, curated by Lene Noer and Birgitte Kristensen, Groundworks was situated in the village Aasted. Deirdre led a series of workshops focused upon the village’s struggle to remain a self-sustaining community. These were based on a collection of local newspaper cuttings about the history of the village over a 40-year period.
The collated archive was re-presented on the walls of the village hall alongside large scale drawings made by Deirdre. Participants used the archive to source images for murals that reflect how they see their place, history and future, completing six murals for the European Rural Forum in 2017 and resumed painting village history in April 2018.
