FARM

2012 - Ongoing

The struggle to continue farming in the face of climate change and a globalized marketplace.

FARM photographic/text installation reflects the struggle to continue farming given climate change and a globalized marketplace. FARM began as a small project for Teagasc, the Irish Agricultural research agency, working with farmers in Connemara and Kerry to highlight their cultural and agricultural connection with place. The research continued in Cumbria with Grizedale Arts and Colorado with visits to farmers and ranchers specialising in grass-fed livestock production. Further research for a joint Irish/US exhibition Hybrid 1 at Redline, Denver (2012) was exhibited as a text/image installation for Hybrid 2 at the Regional Cultural Centre, Donegal (2016) and also presented as part of The Quickening exhibition at the Douglas Hyde Gallery (2024).

The project is further expanded for the artist’s FARMWORK exhibition in Void Art Centre Derry and includes farmers in Counties Fermanagh, Derry-Londonderry, Omagh, Leitrim and Donegal who share their thoughts on the challenges they face – a  growing body of artistic research to highlight the increasingly precarious situations faced by small/medium scale farmers struggling to continue farming as climate change and globalised markets threaten an increasingly bleak future for rural place.

Supported by Teagasc (2012), Grizedale Arts (2012), Culture Ireland (2012), Redline Denver (2012), The Arts Council of Ireland (2012 – ), Regional Cultural Centre, Donegal (2016) and The Arts Council of Northern Ireland (2025).
